Tip 1: Adjust Your Goals
Having goals is great but when you’re unwell or life in getting in the way. Shrink these goals to something achievable. Write only 100 words a day. Write 10 words a day. If you really need to, don’t write at all. Sometimes, Life has to take priority.
Tip 2: Ditch the Routine
I’m all for having a routine. Mine keeps me on track. But when life gets busy, we fall ill or something else gets in the way, we need to adjust. This might mean moving the routine to a different time. It might mean breaking up the routine and finding small moments where we are able to write. Find what’s manageable for you in these moments and do what’s working for you. Sometimes pushing ourselves is the least helpful thing.
Tip 3: Opt for Short Writing Sessions
10 minutes is all you need. 1 minute sometimes. You don’t need to sit down and write for hours. Especially if you’re not up for it. Writing in sustainable ways for your life and your energy levels will be what makes you want to keep coming back. And consistency is the most important thing.
Tip 4: Explore Different Writing Activities
If writing is too much, how about watching a video about writing? It’s still to do with writing and is a productive activity but is a lot less energy for you. Why not listen to my podcast episodes while driving or cooking or napping.
Tip 5: Let Yourself Rest
Write in bed, listen to podcasts and videos while laying down. If writing is too much, don’t do anything that has anything to do with it. We all need breaks from time to time. Allow yourself one.
