Writing is all we want to do. As writers, it's in our blood, it's our passion, we have to do it.
And we will.
There's not a lot in life that will allow us to veer off the part of creativity. One thing we should always let distract us - knowledge.
Learning about writing, marketing, the business side of writing - these are all equally important to each other and needed to be treated with equal amounts of gravity.
Of course, writing should always take priority and be the first thing you learn and then you move on.
If there's one thing that you'll let distract you - let it be knowledge. Knowledge is power and you can never learn too much.
Jump on your favourite search engine and start searching all the questions you've ever wanted to ask - you'll be surprised with what's out there. Pick up books on the business of writing and how to write - you'll be surprised with what you learn. Pick up your favourite novels and get reading - you'll be subconsciously picking up on how to write from these books.
Find people who've been in your shoes and are showing you the way - hint, hint.
Start with sentence structure. Find out how to craft the most beautiful sentences you'll ever want to read (I'm leaving this vague on purpose, beauty is subjective).
Then read your favourite authors and pay attention to how they play around with structure and wording.Once you know the rules, you can break the rules.
Now write, write, write.
Then you move on to learning how to edit - cry, cry, cry.
Edit some more.
And you learn all about the business of writing, whether you want to be self-published or traditionally published, you must learn the business side of things.
Knowledge is power and we all need to know how to tie a tie. It's a basic life skill.
