Writers tend to prefer their work to do the talking. They want to write the stuff, put it into the world and then have the glory come to them - without telling anyone, advertising, or even complimenting themselves.
Compliment yourself. Now.
Shouting about your writing, sharing your knowledge and “nerding out” about your passion - not only is it fun, it’s a great way to bring in an audience.
Let your nerd run free and tell everyone about what you're doing, learning and achieving. They’ll love to hear about what you're passionate about and striving for.
Letting people see what you’re doing and how much you know is a great way to capture people's attention. And you ain’t selling books without attention.
Here’s some ways you can let your nerd out without being obnoxious:
Start a blog. You can nerd out as much as you want here without annoying your loved ones. You might even see your loved ones pop up in the comments. Name your blog something you can create a brand around, write guest posts on other blogs and post your musings to social media for the world to enjoy.
Become an avid online reader. Engage and comment on blog posts and stories others have created. Show off your nerd by loving on the work of other nerds - you might just find your tribe and grow your community. We all need community.
Tell a family member who has lots of friends. Talk to the family gossip. Tell them you’re writing a story, tell them what it’s about - before you know it, you’ll have constant free advertisement.
It’s hard shouting about your work, especially when you want the work to do the talking. With small steps, you’ll slowly get used to the world of self confidence and it’ll only continue to build.
