Where To Find Ideas

Ideas are a crazy thing. Where do they come from? Our back pocket. My wallet. In the middle of an m&m sandwich.

Ideas spark from the deep, dark, depth of the brain. The part most people suppress due to fear or embarrassment - that’s where my ideas come from.

Every writer struggles with ideas from time to time. Sometimes, you just run out of brain juice and you need a break. Sometimes… No, that’s it in my experience.

We writers work our minds so hard creating a product out of nothing. Sometimes they just need a tea break.

But when a nap doesn’t help, there are other techniques to help your brain get back into work mode.

  1. Go for a walk and people watch. See how people interact with each other, notice the words they use, their body language, try to guess the relationships of the people hanging out and ask yourself “what if…” and “why…”

  2. Read a book. Not only is this great study, your mind might start wandering off and spark an idea.

  3. Look up writing prompts. These are usually not that helpful for a novel, but you can write short stories and see where those stories lead.

Give these a go and comment your favourite - or a completely different technique you prefer.
